What is remote or virtual dog training like?

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck, it seemed like everyone ran out and got a puppy.

Despite this, a lot of dog trainers just stopped working. There was a sense that the only way to do the job was in-person, either in group classes or in private, one-on-one sessions.

I had already learned how to work with clients in a virtual setting through my separation anxiety work. After all, you can’t teach a dog how to be confident and happy when left alone if everyone’s there!

There are distinct advantages to training in a virtual setting, as opposed to training in person or even in a class setting. Just a few of these include:

  • Training in a setting your pup already knows and where he/she feels confident when learning new things.

  • No changes in behavior from the pup because “the trainer is here”.

  • Recorded sessions that you can review on your own.

  • Plan sessions according to your schedule.

  • No driving required! No one’s ever late!

So what’s a virtual training session like?

Once we have a session booked, and you’ve given me all the info about you and your pup and your goals for training, I will follow up with you about what you need for our session and send you a link to a virtual meeting room.

Most sessions start with a review of what we’re going to cover, and any new info you may have to share. We’ll then dive right in and start training. I may start with a demonstration of the skill using one of my own dogs, share a video, or simply walk you through the necessary steps to practice the particular skill we’re working on.

After that, you’ll work with your dog and I’ll coach you—exactly as I would if I were in the same room with you.

Once our session is over, I’ll send you a follow-up email with notes from our session with homework and a link to the recording, in case you wish to review it at your convenience.

So if you’re one of the lucky ones out there who got a puppy recently, and you’re wondering about training and proper socialization and how to deal with those sharp puppy teeth, feel free to book a session with me or, if you’re not sure, book a free, 15-minute call to get more info. I’m always happy to chat about dogs and dog training! :-)
