Stuff I Recommend, Part 1

POTTY TRAINING SUPPLIES

Thanks to @alanking for the cool pic.

I’ll just say it: pee pads are not the best choice. Puppies absolutely love to rip them to shreds, the plastic backing is bad for puppies if ingested and bad for the environment, too. Not all puppies take to them quickly, and even if they do, you still have to transition your puppy to going potty on a new surface outside your home.

My #1 recommended alternative is real grass.

Now if you live in a home with a grassy yard, this is perfect. You’ll simply need to take puppy out to the grassy area to potty, and praise and reward for going in the “right spot”.

If you don’t have grass nearby, there are now companies that can provide a potty-area-sized box of grass instead. Local suppliers include Pooch Patch and BC Instant Lawns. If you’re into DIY, maybe you can buy some sod and make your own.

My #2 recommended alternative is artificial turf.

There are companies that make dog potties using fake grass that look pretty nice sitting on your balcony or patio. Again though, you can make your own by buying some artificial turf and a pan to sit it in. You’ll need enough turf to make a 2-3 replacement turfs so that you can swap them out when you need to clean.
