Speed Up Your Dog Training

Get faster dog training results

The truth is, in all but the rarest cases, your training success will happen faster if you slow it down.

As human beings living in an already fast-paced world, we want results NOW! Unfortunately your pup did not get the memo.

There are two main ways I want to address this topic today: skills progress, and handling/general husbandry.

For the first—skills progress—I want to say that just like it’s important to learn to walk before we can run, you want to make sure your dog is reliably performing a skill before you increase the difficulty. “Stay” is a perfect example. If you haven’t taught your puppy to hold a sit or a down for at least 10 seconds, then the moment you take a step away from them, they’ll break the Stay.

And usually, as soon as we can take 2 steps away, we’ll take 10, and guess what? Yup, broken Stay again. The more times that Stay is broken, the more it breaks and pretty soon, we’ve got to start all over again.

Similarly with handling, we go too fast. Lots of small dogs hesitate, or even run away, when we try to pick them up. Instead of chasing your dog or puppy around your home, make sure your dog sees you coming. If puppy moves away, just be patient. Most pups will accept to be picked up as long as you’re not launching a sneak attack.

If you’re having a hard time with training or handling though, and you have already tried slowing down and haven’t seen success, reach out to me. I can help!
